Pattern of primary caesarean deliveries in a Nigerian tertiary hospital

Background: Primary caesarean section (CS) has become a major driver of the steadily rising total rate. This study determined primary CS rate, pattern and associated factors.Methods: It was retrospective, hospital-based cross-sectional 645 pregnant women who had over 3-year period in Lagos state university teaching hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. Data obtained were expressed frequency percentages.Results: accounted for more than 50% all done during with rate 16.7% 30.6%. commonest among age group 30-39years (50.1%) no prior parous experience (58.6%). The indication poor progress labour due to cephalopelvic disproportion, which occurred 170 (26.4%), followed by suspected foetal distress 94 (14.6%) hypertensive disease pregnancy 91 (14.1%). Post-operative wound infection and/or dehiscence most prevalent post-operative complication occurring 12.1% CS.Conclusions: is increasing relatively common primiparous women. Cephalopelvic disorders are leading indications CS.
